Articles and Khan Academy

I read two educational articles and watched a YouTube article on Khan academy. The first article was called Teachers' Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge and Learning Activity Types: Curriculum-based Technology Integration Reframed by Judith Harris, Punya Mishra, and Matthew Koehler about TPACK and how it is used in the classroom. In the article is it stated that TPACK is a "considerable interest that has surfaced in using the notion of technology pedagogical content knowledge as a framework to understand teachers' knowledge required for effective technology integration." TPACK is an effective system to keep teachers and their curriculum up to date and on the right mind set to be as effective as it can be.

The second article I read was called The Net generation as Preservice Teachers: Transferring Familiarity with New Technologies to Educational Environments by Swapna Kumar and Katya Vigil. this article is about how preservice teachers need to know and learn about the new technologies and get use to using them for when they enter the teaching environment. It includes surveys and studies of how many preservice teachers are familiar with certain technologies like Google Doc, wiki, online video sharing, and social bookmarking to name a few. I believe that it is important for students in teacher education programs to be familiar with as many technologies as possible so that they can incorporate it in their classrooms and have a variety of methods to teach their students.

The YouTube video I watched was about Khan Academy. It was about an algebra problem and the guy was using different colors to highlight important information and working out the problem step by step. This would be really helpful for all ages if they need clarification or step by step instruction to follow along if they didn't grasp the concept in class very well. I think Khan Academy is a great tool to use in the classroom and for students to use at home.

  1. Christy, you have done a great job in Blogger and I enjoy your reflection here!!Recently, blogs begun to emerge as a useful type of educational technology. The literature discusses a number of interesting possibilities for the use of blogs. For example, it is suggested that students can use blogs to publish their own writings, discuss group assignments, peer review each other’s work, collaborate on projects and manage their digital portfolios.
Overall, from my perspective as a teacher, I believe that the blogs added a new dimension to my teaching effectiveness by enabling me to do things that were not possible otherwise, either with or without other technology. Initially, I saw blogging as a means by which I could provide my reflections to address emerging issues relevant to students’ learning. Blog technology allows students as readers of my reflections to post their comments. Blog can also be used as a resource distribution medium. I understood that it is appropriate for students to also maintain their own blogs, where they could reflect upon learning that took place in class sessions, present their work and express ideas and concerns. Once I began reading and reviewing students’ blogs, it became obvious that this activity is time-consuming due to having to follow up all blogs individually and to keep track of new posts and comments soon after they had been added…But, I still love doing it!!
